Park Maintenance Worker (Full-Time)

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER I, II, III

 

General Statement of Duties

Performs various semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of town buildings, parks and recreation areas.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks that relate to building repair and maintenance of parks, ball fields, and recreation facilities.  Work may include operation of equipment.  Worked is performed under the immediate supervision of the Parks Maintenance Crew Leader and is checked by observation and by reports. 


Illustrative Examples of Work

Performs grounds keeping activities such as mowing grass, weeding, weed-eating, and mulching.

Makes regular inspections of parks; removes leaves, empties trash, stocks and cleans restrooms; inspects for needed repairs.

Performs building maintenance such as painting, carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing and roofing tasks.

Drags, lines and sets bases for ball fields.

Operates backhoe, front end loader, rubber tire tractor, bobcat, mowing equipment, weed eaters, leaf blowers, and edgers.

Assists in set up for special town functions and activities.

Performs related duties as required.

Work requires general knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work assigned.

Must have the ability to operate tools and equipment used in the work assigned.

Must have the ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time.

Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Must have the ability to maintain effective working relationships.


Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking and hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, and painters.

Must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.

The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and noise.

The worker is subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or exposure to chemicals.

The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilations.

The worker may come in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids during the performance of his/her duties.

Criteria

Park Maintenance Worker I

Time in Lower Grade - This is an entry-level position. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.

North Carolina Class C Driver's License.
        

Required Certifications - High School Diploma or equivalent. (Must be obtained within 15 months from hire.)

Park Maintenance Worker II

Time in Lower Grade - Minimum 5 years of working experience with at least 3 years of light-medium duty equipment experience. (Timeframe does not have to be with the Town of Kernersville.) No disciplinary action during the preceding 12 months.

Required Certifications - High School Diploma or equivalent (Must be obtained within 15 months of hire.)

Facility Crew- Certified Playground Safety Inspector.

Ground Crew – Pesticide Applicators License.

North Carolina Class B commercial driver’s license with clearance and without restriction in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse to immediately perform FMCSA Safety Sensitive duties as a DOT regulated Driver under 49 CFR parts 382 & 391.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Operates a small to medium backhoe & front-end loader on a crew requiring special skill and care.            

Operates a motor grader to grade fields and athletic facilities, clean ditches, and remove snow and ice from park areas.

Inspect and repair department facilities such as playgrounds, restrooms, meeting rooms, and natural areas.            

Performs skilled work such as masonry, carpentry, minor electrical, minor plumbing, and minor HVAC repair.

Drives a dump truck when needed to transport materials such as stone, leaves and brush, and soil.            

Operates bobcats and attachments & tractors and attachments.

Park Maintenance Worker III

Time in Lower Grade - Minimum 8 year of working experience with at least 5 years in light duty equipment experience (4 of the 8 years must be with the Town of Kernersville.) Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Park Maintenance Worker Level II. No disciplinary action during the preceding 12 months.

Required Certifications - High School Diploma or equivalent.

Facility Crew- Course completion in Facility Maintenance at Forsyth Tech.

Ground Crew – Course completion of Landscaping Design or Turf Management.

North Carolina Class B commercial driver’s license with clearance and without restriction in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse to immediately perform FMCSA Safety Sensitive duties as a DOT regulated Driver under 49 CFR parts 382 & 391.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Serves as Crew Supervisor in the absence or crew leader; helps lead and direct other crew members.            

Performs skilled tasks, supervises others within projects, and is able to work independently, as a leader worker, or as part of a crew.
